The Highland Council’s Catering Service operates the school meals service. Our cook in charge is Mrs Libby McLean.
Lunch is provided in the multi-purpose hall and is similar to a self- service cafeteria. The canteen was commended highly during the last inspection and the school is Health Promoting. This guarantees that there will be a healthy choice on the menu every day, prepared with a minimum of fat and salt and including fresh fruit and vegetables.
Pupils are free to choose what they wish, and all items are priced individually.
The canteen offers a meat and vegetarian choice; typically roast meat dinner, curry, fish and chips, lasagne or pasta dish. Sweets include fruit crumble, fruit sponges, ice cream or fresh fruit salad.

Smart Cards
Most pupils use the smart card system to pay for school lunch. This allows regular payments to be made onto a debit card and does away with the need for pupils to carry cash daily. Payment can be made onto the card using cash or cheque (payable to Highland Council with pupil’s address on the back) to a maximum of £35.00.
Free meals are available depending on family circumstances. Appropriate forms are available from the School Office; on completion these should be forwarded to the Area Education Office, Castle Street, Dingwall, IV15 9HU. These forms must be renewed each session for free meals to continue. All pupils who receive free school meals are issued with a smart card, thus removing differences between children. This is electronically credited with £1.85 daily, but any unspent money cannot be carried forward.
Packed Lunches
A number of pupils choose to bring a packed lunch to school. Those who do so are accommodated, under supervision, in the Dining Hall and should not eat in any other area of the School without prior permission.
The following notes of guidance, issued by the Education Authority, take the form of strong recommendations designed for the safety and protection of pupils, and parents are requested to follow these instructions exactly.
- All food must be carried in a semi-rigid container with a secure lid. Containers should be clearly marked with the name of the pupil.
- Glass bottles or containers are not permitted under the Health and Safety Regulations.
- Vacuum flasks containing hot liquids are not permitted because of the danger of scalding. (Water and beakers and juice drinks are available in the Dining Hall.)
- Packed lunches must be consumed in the Dining Hall.
- Pupils are not permitted to go to the shops to ‘buy a packed lunch’ during school hours.
